Welcome to Miami – Annie!

Annie was a premedical student here in Colorado when she began volunteering with our BBSHOP Program.  Annie subsequently started a small- scale program in Miami when she started medical school at the University of Miami.

The Colorado Black Health Collaborative (CBHC) depends on our volunteers to help achieve our mission.  The mission is to achieve health equity in Colorado’s Black Community.  As part of this mission, CBHC has a Barbershop/Salon Health Outreach Program (BBSHOP), meeting people in the shops to address health needs.  We currently have 15 shops that we serve in Metro Denver.  To date we have served over 7000 people, since starting the program in 2012.

Annie was a premedical student here in Colorado when she began volunteering with our BBSHOP Program.  One of our regular volunteers had mentioned the program when he learned of her life goal to become a doctor.  Annie took time out of her busy Saturday’s to join us at the shops.  She screened and educated clients and they really enjoyed her.  When she was accepted into the University of Miami Medical School and became acclimated to her workload, she thought of her Metro Denver shop days. She also realized that there was a great need to develop a BBSHOP Program in Miami.  She reached out to CBHC, her Colorado connection, for advice.  With some tips, she was on her way and launched her own program.  In a recent email from Annie, she let us know that things are going well and they are hoping to add 2 more shops.

Annie was featured in the November 2017 CBHC BBSHOP Newsletter. https://www.coloradoblackhealth.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/BBSHOP-November-Newsletter-2017.pdf.

Get more general information about the CBHC BBSHOP @ www.coloradoblackhealth.org or come by and visit us at one of the 15 shops.  The CBHC web-site Event Calendar provides you with detailed information for where we will be.
