“WHAT DOES THE 4TH OF JULY MEAN TO THE NEGRO”
“The former slave and abolitionist, Frederick Douglass, gave this speech on July 5, 185,2 in Rochester, NY commemorating the day of independence for the United States. Cognizant of the contradictions embedded into the foundation of the United States, Douglass expounded for his audience the significance of “independence” day for black people. In it, he loses no respect for the founders of the nation calling them “statesmen, patriots, and heroes.” But he does not fail to point out the hypocrisy of declaring freedom from Britain’s control while subjugating an entire race of people.”
In the current heath, racial and financial pandemic, the words of Douglas are now as meaningful as any time in American history. CBRT in continuing to try and fulfill our mission of advocacy, information and programs for Colorado Black Citizens and concerned others will sponsor a zoom community presentation on Thursday, July 2nd at 4:00pm. Dr. Sharon Bailey, Educator, Anthropologist and Social Equity Expert will give a presentation on “What Does the 4th of July Mean to Black Americans and All Americans Now.”
In addition there will be a Black Lives & Black Minds Matter Response panel that will include:
